Prague - A sixteen-years old boy has been stabbed to death by a schizophrenic woman at a business high school in the town of Žďár nad Sázavou in South-Western Moravia. The twenty-six-year old woman injured two girls and a policeman as well. The police used a stun gun to incapacitate the attacker who had been released from a psychiatric clinic eight months ago.
The rescuers has transported the injured to the hospital in a nearby Nové Město na Moravě. One of the girls was seriously injured in the attack, but after a surgery her condition has stabilized.
The sixteen-year old boy has tried to stop the woman’s attack on one of the girls, but the schizophrenic stabbed him several times with a long knife.
The school has to be closed and police psychologists have helped the shocked students.
The police interrogated the attacker who could be, regardless of her illness, charged with a murder and sentenced to up to 20 years in prison or receive a life imprisonment sentence. She remains in the police custody. After being interrogated, she said that in attacking the students she wanted to be killed by the police.
„The attacker stands in no relation to the high school or to the region of Žďár nad Sázavou,“ police spokeswoman Jana Kroutilová said.
It is not clear why the woman has attacked the students. The spokeswoman of the regional police Dana Čírtková announced that the schizophrenic had obviously come to the school accidentally and attacked students unknown to her.
The same attacker has stabbed an educator and took a seven-year-old girl hostage in the town of Havířov in Northern Moravia two years ago. Later, she has been charged and could have been sentenced to up to eight years of imprisonment, but the court has released her because of her illness and ordered her transfer to the psychiatric clinic in the nearby town of Opava. On psychiatrist‘s recommendation, she has left the clinic in February and underwent an outpatient treatment.
The protocol on the release of the schizophrenic woman has been signed by the head of the clinic Petr Karaba personally. In his opinion, her illness has improved and it was no more necessary for the women to stay under everyday surveillance of the psychiatrists. He pointed out that the schizophrenic has excellently collaborated with the doctors and understood why she has to be cured.
„If you have a broken leg you won’t spend the rest of your life in plaster cast,“ Karaba said. He pretends that the final decision is always made by a court.
The director of the clinic Ivan Drábek later announced his resignation.
Still, it is not clear if the court has controlled the attacker‘s psychiatric treatment and if the woman has complied with all conditions of the outpatient treatment. The justice minister Helena Válková admitted that the court in Opava that had decided on the woman’s release two years ago has commited, very probably, a mistake.
The judges examined the documents half an hour only and there is no justification of their decision in the documents. The public prosecutor has not appealed against the woman’s release and not demanded that the she should have been sent into a locked psychiatric unit.
