Prague 8 authorities have grandiose plans for Rohanský ostrov neighborhood. It plans to transform it into a modern residential area as well as a place for recreational activities and relaxation.
Apartment and administrative buildings, shops and sports areas will be constructed here.
Originally an actual island, Rohanský ostrov appeared in 1550 at the location of river deposits on the Vltava river where a number of smaller, often nameless, islands existed.
At one time, the island extended from Těšnov to, what is today, Šaldova street.
At the turn of the 20th century, Rohanský island was united with nearby Jerusalémský island, and later Libeňský island. Both were also connected to the Karlín embarkment. Today, the street called Rohanské nábřeží lies along the former location of the canal between the Rohanský island and Karlín.
