Prague/Yale - Czech President Václav Klaus is not the only Czech politician who gets invited by American influential organizations to the US to talk about global warming any longer.
Last week, Martin Bursík, the Czech deputy PM and Environment Minister flew to Yale. He was invited by a group of American Governors to a conference dedicated to climate changes.
But that's where similarities between the trips by the two Czech politicians end.
Whereas Mr Klaus tries to defend his "anti-climate" opinions in the USA, Mr Bursík is going to represent the official policy of the EU, one of the main protagonists on the world stage fighting the global warming.
Turning point meeting of US Governors
Mr Bursík is the only European politician to participate at the turning point "Yale Conference of Governors on Climate Change", a meeting of governors from the states of New Jersey, Iowa, Wisconsin, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, California and Kansas.
"The Governors should sign a joint declaration during the meeting, that will urge both the Congressmen and US Presidency candidates to start and work together as soon as possible on a united American policy on climate protection," Barbora Petrová from the Environment Ministry Press Office explained.
"It's the very first such activity from American governors," Ms Petrová told Aktuálně.cz, adding that Mr Bursík was invited in his quality of an important European politician involved in the issue. Bursík was going to represent EU policy without speechifying about it, she added.
"He will take part in discussions at the conference; he will have bilateral talks with other participants. And he will be there when the expected appeal to the Congress and all the presidential candidates is carried," Ms Petrová said.
Bursík versus Klaus
President Klaus talked about the climate in the USA in March at the New York conference of several hundred politicians and scientists, who are mostly disputing the seriousness of the global warming problem. Mr Klaus then reiterated his position on the matter; the position that caused several controversies with Martin Bursík, among others.
Czech President says the climate change creates unnecessary panic that could limit both the economy development and personal freedoms. Fighting global warming, Mr Klaus says, is tantamount to dangerous ideology.
Mr Bursík, on the other hand, thinks Mr Klaus's opinions are dangerous. Bursík blames Klaus for undermining the Czech Republic´s authority through his stance on the issue.
"Where the global climate changes are concerned, President Klaus is wide of the mark. He's talking nonsense. He'd label some kind of "greenish coloured non governmental organization "the most representative panel of about two thousand scientists who, under the UN mandate, keep analyzing scientific reports and empirical data. Mr Klaus lost his ability to think scientifically or critically," Mr Bursík commented on Václav Klaus´s firm view of the global warming.
