Mladá Boleslav - About 1,500 temporary workers supplied on demand by work agencies have left Škoda Auto since September, as the global financial crisis is hitting hard on the automotive industry.

The largest Czech carmaker, about 60 km north of Prague, still has about 2,500 external temps, most of them from Slovakia and Poland.

"Based on the required production capacity and in view of the production cuts, we are changing the number of personnel supplied by agencies," said company spokesman Jaroslav Černý, adding that the number of in-house staff should remain unchanged for now.

The trade union at Škoda has for a while demanded that the number of external workers should be reduced.
