Logar - Seven Czech soldiers serving in Afghanistan were injured during an attack when patrolling near the military base Shank.

The news comes one day after the Czech government announced its plan to deploy more troops in Afghanistan, which is yet to pass the parliament.

The soldiers are part of the 200-member Provincial Reconstrucion Team (PRT) operating in the region of Logar, just south of the capital Kabul.

"The soldiers were on patrol about 4 kilometers from the base Shank when they were shelled. The soldiers shot back the attackers," Martin Barták, 1st Deputy Defence Minister, explained to Aktuálně.cz what happened. There were four cars and 21 persons at the moment.

Vlastimil Picek, Chief of Staff of the Czech Army, alleged that the shooting came from the anti-tank shell and hand weapons.

"During the incident 6 soldiers were mildly injured while one has been seriously more injured. All of them received medical help right on the spot," said Picek in his press release.

One soldier was transported to a US military hospital in a helicopter in Bagram. Two were taken to the Czech field-hospital in Kabul and four remained in care of the doctors in Shank.

The security situation in the otherwise relatively stable region has been increasingly worsening. Three international female aid workers were shot dead in August.

The government said Monday that the number of Czech troops deployed in foreign missions next year could reach 1200. There are 900 soldiers deployed abroad at the moment.
