Footballgate emerges

Revealed - Daniel Kretinsky, a co-owner of the Sparta Prague club, provided the Czech Football Association with documents allegedly detailing alarming activities in Czech football.

Kretinsky handed a black bag containing the documents directly to the association's chairman Miroslav Pelta last week, and both men refused to reveal what exactly the documents contained... (read more here).

Alcohol tax and black market

In figures - Between 1990 and 2003, the Czech Republic's annual per capita consumption of hard liquor increased from seven to 8.4 liter.

In 2004, the consumption dramatically dropped by one tenth after the government increased the alcohol tax.

Did Czechs really started to drink less hard liquor? Extremely unlikely. Instead, the 10 percent "drop" was probably offset by an equal increase in consumption of black market - read: untaxed - spirits... (read more here).

Three firms monopolized EU aid in South Bohemia

Revealed - Three firms linked to the senior government Civic Democratic Party (ODS) received a large majority of EU subsidies from the "Southwest" regional operational program between 2007 and 2009.

The "Southwest" program awards EU subsidies for the South Bohemian and Plzen regions.

The three agencies - G-Project, KP Projekt and Rera - created a virtual monopoly on EU subsidies in the two regions... (read more here).
