UPDATE (August 4): The two Czech female tourists who died in Egypt's Hurghada resort earlier this week were killed by an "extremely strong poison" that definitely did not come from food, a Hurghada public hospital chief told state Czech Radio, adding that the women's stomachs were "entirely corroded".

Egypt police told the LN newspaper that the incident is being investigated as a possible murder, with the two women's husband and father as a prime suspect.

The original story from July 30 is here.

Cairo - Two Czech female tourists, a 36-year-old mother and her 8-year-old daughter, died in Egypt, reported state-run Czech Television (CT), adding that the two women were from the north-Czech city of Karvina.

The two women were found dead in their hotel room, but the details of their death are not known yet. The father has been taken to hospital in Egypt, his condition is stable reported CT.

"I can confirm the death of two of our citizens in Egypt in Hurghada," David Frous from the Foreign Ministry's press office told Aktualne.cz. "I cannot provide more details at this moment," said Frous, adding that the ministry is currently talking to Egypt authorities and the women's families.

The death may have been caused by food poisoning, because the family was reportedly suffering from stomach problems the day before. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Johana Grohova called this a "pure speculation." "This may be so, but at this moment we don't know," she said.

Hurghada is a major tourist resort on the Red Sea coast.

"We have received the information and we are in contact with the travel agency's officials," Czech ambassador to Egypt Pavel Kafka told the Czech Press Agency (CTK).

The family reportedly traveled with the Blue Style travel agency.

Egypt is one of the most popular destinations for Czech tourists - around 140,000 visited the Arab country in 2012. Foreign Ministry data shows that 385 Czechs died abroad in 2012, the smallest number since 2006.
