Přes poměrně krátkou historii, o kterou se může běh s olympijskou pochodní opřít, vznikla okolo toho aktu silna symbolická atmosféra. Na některých dobových plakátech byl běh s olympijským ohňě stvárněn až s mysteriózním patosem.
