22 May 1981, looking SW. "Wedge" tornado nearly a mile wide. This violent tornado produced up to F4 damage, flattened cars before wrapping them around denuded trees, and flung cattle and vehicles for hundreds of yards. The same supercell had earlier spawned the Alfalfa tornado above. Doppler radar scans of this storm were intensively studied in the 1980s.
Alfalfa OK, 22 May 1981, looking NNW. A "textbook" tornado extending from the wall cloud of a classic supercell, with a "clear slot" cutting through the cloud base around the near side of the wall cloud. The slot represents part of the occlusion downdraft, an arc of sinking air believed to contribute to tornado development in many cases. The tornado did damage rated at F2.

Obyvatelé pražského Žižkova mohli 23. května dopoledne ve sportovním areálu Na Pražačce spatřit prašný vír, který připomínal tornádo. Jednalo se o netornádický tromb, který však kromě vzhledu nemá s tornádem nic společného. Na rozdíl od tornáda, které se vytváří pouze za bouřkové oblačnosti v důsledku cirkulace vzduchu, vznikají prašné víry po přehřátí terénu. (ČR-počasí-vír)

Nad jihošpanělským Motrilem se přehnalo 9. listopadu tornádo v souvislosti se studenou frontou, která přinesla na území země prudký vítr, sněžení i déšť.
Tornádo zasáhlo 19.června obec Sunlu poblíž tureckého hlavního města Istanbulu. Vzdušný vír zabil nejméně čtyři osoby, řadu dalších zranil a způsobil velké škody na majetku.
STORM CHASER Stormchaser Mike Hollingshead drives thousands of miles to photograph extreme weather conditions. Come hell or high water, Hollingshead pays no heed to storm warnings, clocking up around 20,000 miles to capture shots of some 40 storms a year. Born in Nebraska in 1976, Mike went on his first storm chase east of town in 1999 - witnessing his first tornado. He never looked back.... Quitting his job in March 2004 at a local big corn milling plant, Mike started capturing the natural phenomena in pictures. Now, this foul-weather friend can safely say he has peered into the eye of the storm: tornadoes, twisters, typhoons, halos, light pillars, geomagnetic storm auroras, twilights supercells - he has seen them all. Mike says: "I'm often asked what was my favourite storm. After a lot of years and some truly crazy storms. Debris flies through the air as a freak tornado tears through the coastal town of Lennox Head on June 3, 2010. The storm levelled 12 homes and damaged another 30, with twisting winds carving out a 300 metre-wide path of destruction, injuring six people and leaving thousands without power.

A Family Surveys the Destruction of Their Home and Property Original caption:Houses, property and trees in Moore, Oklahoma were devastated by an F5 tornado on May 3, 1999. An estimated 1,500 homes were destroyed. It was the first time the Oklahoma City metro area was hit by an F5 twister. An F5 is the highest level tornado on the Fujita Scale, with winds between 261-318 miles and hour. The wind was so violent it stripped the bark off of trees.

Twister with a twist in desert - (PICTURED: AEROPLANE TRAIL TORNADO IN THE SAUDI ARABIAN DESERT) - This is the moment a huge tornado appeared to be forming to rip across the middle of the desert. This stunning image appears to show the swirling wind gathering speed in front of the magnificent sunset. But while people sitting in the desert began to panic, it became clear that the super storm was in fact an AEROPLANE TRAIL. Amateur photographer Tariq Almutlaq, 45, was picnicking in the Saudi Arabian desert near Riyadh with his family, when people began to point at the sky. Fearing a tornado was imminent, they went to return to their cars - before realising that the twisted tunnel was nothing more than a jet trail.

Mars’ Whirling Dust Devil A Martian dust devil roughly 12 miles (20 kilometers) high was captured winding its way along the Amazonis Planitia region of Northern Mars on March 14, 2012 by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Despite its height, the plume is little more than three-quarters of a football field wide (70 yards, or 70 meters). HiRISE is operated by the University of Arizona, Tucson. The instrument was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Project and the Mars Exploration Rover Project are managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology, also in Pasadena. Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver, built the orbiter. The Serpent Dust Devil of Mars A towering dust devil casts a serpentine shadow over the Martian surface in this image acquired by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The scene is a late-spring afternoon in the Amazonis Planitia region of northern Mars. The view covers an area about four-tenths of a mile (644 meters) across. North is toward the top. The length of the dusty whirlwind's shadow indicates that the dust plume reaches more than half a mile (800 meters) in height. The plume is about 30 yards or meters in diameter. A westerly breeze partway up the height of the dust devil produced a delicate arc in the plume. The image was taken during the time of Martian year when the planet is farthest from the sun. Just as on Earth, winds on Mars are powered by solar heating. Exposure to the sun's rays declines during this season, yet even now, dust devils act relentlessly to clean the surface of freshly deposited dust, a little at a time. This view is one product from an observation made by HiRISE on Feb. 16, 2012, at 35.8 degrees north latitude, 207 degrees east longitude. Cosmic Tornado Light-years in length, this cosmic tornado is actually a powerful jet cataloged as HH (Herbig-Haro) 49/50. Though such energetic outflows are well known to be associated with the formation of young stars, the exact cause of the spiraling structures apparent in this case is still mysterious. The embryonic star responsible for the 62 mile per second jet is located just off the top of the picture, while the bright star seen near the tip of the jet may just by chance lie along the line of sight.
