Indie patří, co se týče těžby černého uhlí, mezi světové velmoci. Disponuje přibližně 7 procenty z celkových zásob této suroviny ve světě . Kolem 70 procent vytěženého uhlí se v Indii využívá na výrobu elektrické energie.
