Freegani se nechtějí podílet na konzumním stylu života, který podporuje plýtvání zdroji, například jídla. Proto se rozhodli, že si jídlo v obchodech pokud možno nebudou kupovat vůbec. Raději ho hledají v popelnicích a kontejnerech; nejčastěji v místech, kde se obchody zbavují potravin s prošlou spotřební lhůtou.
