Prague - Jan Fischer, head of the Czech National Statistics Office, was sworn in by President Václav Klaus at 2 pm on Thursday.
The centre-right governing coalition, headed by outgoing PM Mirek Topolánek (Civic Democrats), lost in a no-confidence vote last month.
The opposition Social Democrats (ČSSD) called on the vote in the light of alleged corruption and cronyism among the ruling Civic Democrats.
Topolánek and the opposition ČSSD leader Jiří Paroubek agreed on forming a caretaker technocrat cabinet as soon as possible.
The 58-old non-partisan economist Fischer was Topolánek's and Paroubek's compromise. He is an absolute novice to top politics.
Fischer has stressed before that he plans to get back to work as soon as the new government is in power and he has said so even during his inauguration.
"I would like to say once again that I will go back to my office as soon as the new government is in place," Fischer said with President Klaus next to him.
Under the deal signed by the ruling coalition and opposition, the non-partisan expert government is expected to assume power May 9 and rule the country until the snap election on October 9 and 10.
