Government and opposition clash over new spymaster

Behind the scenes - One year before the 2014 legislative election, the senior ruling ODS and the opposition CSSD have entered into a row over the new head of the Office for Foreign Relations and Information (UZSI), the Czech Republic's foreign intelligence agency, currently headed by Ivo Schwarz.

The Ceska Pozice website and Ekonom weekly newspaper wrote that current ambassador to Israel Tomas Pojar, a former ODS member, is interested in the post... (read more here).

 

ERA to present new version of Tamara/Vera passive radar

Behind the scenes - The new radar is able to detect stealth jets by processing reflections of radio or television waves that bounce off the plane.

"Moreover, we are also close to another important ability: to identify small unmanned planes," said ERA executive Sotana. According to URNA anti-terrorist unit chief Libor Lochman, this ability would be very valuable for the protection of strategic objects or events from air terrorist attacks... (read more here).

 

Bulgarian election brings bad news for CEZ

Business - Czech energy company CEZ has few reasons to rejoice over the outcome of Bulgaria's parliamentary election. The future of the semi-state company's license to operate in the Balkan country is uncertain.

CEZ will have to rely on the support from European Union officials, such as European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, who told Czech President Milos Zeman at the end of April that the EU will protect CEZ in Bulgaria... (read more here).
