Godfathers, spies, rebels: Background of Nagyova case

Revealed - The entire case started on 6 January 2012, when police began to investigate then Prague prosecutor Libor Grygarek, tapping his phone and spying on him. Grygarek was known to have contacts with Prague's lobbyists, municipal politicians and influential figures called "godfathers". The detectives believed that these contacts put Grygarek in a conflict of interests. At the same time, police launched a similar investigation of Prague lobbyists Roman Janousek, Ivo Rittig and Tomas Hrdlicka... (read more here).

Analysis - Politicians were apparently not informed about the police operation in advance and, as everybody else, they were forced to rely on information from the media to learn what was going on. For the first time in the past 20 years, law-enforcement officials took initiative and politicians were only reacting.

Defendant in MUS case claims to have received "death threat"

Behind the scenes - The Czech Coal Services (CCS) company is a civil participant and aggrieved party, alongside the Swiss prosecution, in the legal case against former senior managers of the MUS coal mining company, which is being handled by a court in Switzerland's Bellinzona. Unlike the Czech state, which has failed to join the suit, CCS may actually claim the billions frozen in Swiss banks (read more here).
