Support in parliament for the treaty far from secured

Prague - The Czech government approved the main Czech-American agreement about the radar base.

NATO-SOFA treaty is not prepared yet.

The government wants to submit both treaties to the parliament at the same time.

"The main agreement is approved. Now, what lies ahead of us is an arrangement of bilateral NATO-SOFA treaty so we can make out both of them and present them to the Lower Chamber and the Senate in order to have them ratified," informed PM Mirek Topolánek.

According to information obtained by Aktuálně.cz, all ministers were in favor of the proposal, with only Ondřej Liška from the Green Party abstaining.

However, Liška refused to confirm or refute this information, in his text message sent to Aktuálně.cz he only stated that ministers from the Green Party agreed on not publicizing how they voted.

Volatile support

Liška's abstention shows that the Greens are not united over the issue. It is not clear yet how their MPs will vote in the parliament.

Green MPs Olga Zubová and Věra Jakubková are thinking of voting against the proposal, Liška's approval is far from being certain as well.

Ludvík Hovorka from the Christian Democratic Party (KDU-ČSL) is not decided either.

Some lawmakers don't like that the radar will not being subjected to direct NATO command.

The treaty Aktuálně.cz was allowed to look into states that the command over the station will belong to the USA.
