Czech opposition working on close ties with China

Behind the scenes - CSSD deputy chairman Lubomir Zaoralek and KSCM chairman Vojtech Filip, two top representatives of the left-wing opposition, attended a conference of European political parties in China last week.

The CSSD is widely expected to win the next legislative election in 2014, and Zaoralek is the party's main candidate for the next foreign minister. "This opens doors for me. If I wasn't from the (CSSD), I would get no attention here," he said... (read more here).

 

EC did not authorize 2011-12 solar subsidy worth EUR 1bil

Revealed - Over the past two years, the Industry Ministry has awarded state subsidies for solar plants worth, according to unconfirmed reports, a total of as much as CZK 30 billion (approximately EUR 1.2 billion). The problem is that the European Commission (EC) did not approve these subsidies, which makes then a form of "unauthorized state support" for Czech solar plant operators... (read more here).

 

Analyst: Russia used treaty with FBI to legitimize operations in Caucasus

Foreign - According to Russian security expert Andrei Soldatov, Russia's FSB used the memorandum of cooperation with the FBI, signed in 2004, "to legitimize its presence in the North Caucasus and to prove that the fight against North Caucasus extremists was the fight against international terrorism. In reality, the cooperation between the Russian and American security agencies has never been significant." (read more here).
