Terezín - The company that will be in charge of guarding the Theresienstadt Memorial (Terezín in Czech) has been selected.

The Terezín Memorial cemetery was damaged twice by vandals in April and it was agreed that a camera system would be installed.

The winner of the tender is the Trade Fides company. Interestingly, two high-ranking representatives of this firm are involved in one of the gravest corruption affairs in the Czech army. They are currently awaiting trial.

"Best offer"

In 2006, Czech army officer Miroslav Beňa was arrested as he was leaving a flat of Libor Hledík, a legal representative of Trade Fides. Beňa was caught with an envelope with CZK 1 million (EUR 41,000) on him.

Beside Beňa and Hledík, business manager of the company and ex-employee of the Defense Ministry Dana Mlejnková was prosecuted too.

According to Stanislav Krejný, head of the Terezín Memorial Technical Department, Trade Fides was chosen because its offer was the best. Trade Fides won a bid which was attended by ten firms.

Badly harmed

Miroslav Řiháček, director general of Trade Fides, recently told Aktuálně.cz that the company´s reputation was badly tarnished because of the charges filed against its two representatives. Allegedly, Trade Fides lost at least CZK 150 million (EUR 6.25 million).

But the company is alleged to be doing better again. Winning Terezín Memorial tender makes Řiháček happy.

"I consider it an honor that we have won a bid to supply a security system for the Terezín Memorial. It is more than a matter of prestige and finding the right technology solution that would meet the Memorial´s demands," assured Řiháček who is convinced that there will be no more bronze plates stolen from the Terezín Memorial cemetery.
