Pre-July 4 Fireworks From the Sun The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured this M5.6 class solar flare on July 2, 2012 at 6:52am EDT. It was accompanied by a "non" Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME). The flare came from a large sunspot called AR1515, located in the southern hemisphere of the sun.
