End of rebellion in ODS: Everyone has their price

Behind the scenes - In September, a group of six deputies from the ruling Civic Democratic Party (ODS) threatened not to vote for the government's tax hike bill, arguing the proposal was not consistent with the party's electoral platform.

Eventually, three of the "rebels" - Petr Tluchor, Ivan Fuksa and Marek Snajdr - resigned as deputies. This allowed the coalition to pass the bill at the beginning of November, which effectively saved the government... (read more here).

Direct presidential election may turn into legal battle

Behind the scenes - The Czech Republic's first-ever direct presidential election may turn into a series of lawsuits.

Two weeks ago, presidential candidate Tomio Okamura said in an interview with Czech Internet newspaper Aktualne.cz that if his candidacy is not approved, he will file a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court. This could possibly result in a delay or cancellation of the election to be held on January 11 and 12... (read more here).

Vitkovice CEO: Renewable energy fees are killing Czech industry

Business - Vitkovice Machinery Group, the Czech Republic's biggest engineering firm, will see its revenues grow at least by 10 percent this year compared to 2011, said the firm's board chairman and director general Jan Svetlik.

Nonetheless, Svetlik admitted that growing fees for renewable energy create a downward pressure on the firm's profits... (read more here).
