Intelligence service report indicates the Sazka management has links to government officials

Prague - Who is to blame for the lack of money in Czech sports? The answer may be the lottery company Sazka.

Intending to find out why Czech sports lack sufficient funds, former Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek (Civic Democrats) and former education and sports minister Ondřej Liška (Green Party) asked the Czech intelligence service BIS to launch an investigation into Sazka management with the BIS intelligence service.

The BIS report indicates some of the Sazka activities are threatening state security and there may be links of the Sazka management to government officials, including police. Topolánek formed a special secret service task force to monitor Sazka activities.

Sazka is a major lottery company in the Czech Republic, which by law is obliged to support sports activities and physical education in the country from its profit.

From the BIS report, which Aktuálně.cz has at its disposal, it also transpires that the funds serve to repay the construction of the arena in Prague - Vysočany, instead of funding the sports activities.

Sazka is repaying the construction of this multi-purpose sports arena that was built to host the 2004 World Ice Hockey Championship.

The Sazka head Aleš Hlušák said there was nothing wrong with this system.

"The Finance Ministry has approved of that," he told Czech public service on Wednesday. "There is nothing to be surpirsed about."

Topolánek and Liška planned to change the Sazka management in a radical way but the Civic Democrat ruling party cabinet was voted down in a no confidence vote in April.
