IN PICTURES: PM opens strategic Gazelle gas pipeline
The high-pressure pipeline, situated in the north-western part of the Czech Republic, connects the country with Nord Stream, a gigantic Russian-German gas transport infrastructure project. Nord Stream goes underneath the seabed of the Baltic Sea, providing an alternative route for Russia's gas supplies to Germany and other EU states.
The traditional route, via Ukraine, has been considered unreliable in past years due to periodic winter disputes between Ukraine and Russia over gas deliveries.
NET4GAS, the operator of the Czech Republic's gas pipeline system, has invested nearly CZK 10 billion (EUR 400 million) in the project. The construction of the Gazelle gas pipeline began in October 2011. The works were carried out by Denys-Alpin, a Belgian-Austrian consortium, Czech company Plynostav and Russia's Strojtransgaz.
The Gazelle pipeline will transport 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas a year, which is approximately 3.5 times more than the Czech Republic's consumption, said NET4GAS board member Radek Bencik. The Czech Republic is becoming an important gas transit crossroads in Europe, added Bencik. Gazelle connects the Opal pipeline in northern Germany with the Megal pipeline in southern Germany, both part of Nord Stream.
